Another cold week at Piitoayis Family School! Thank you so much for making sure your children are dressed warmly before leaving home :)
We have been busy: -learning to sketch -learning how to use word referents to create suspense in our writing -in math some of us are learning measurement and some of use are learning more about multiplication -we are learning about estimation in our homeroom class -in anticipation of pink shirt day on Thursday we have been making posters -making our values posters -practicing our school song for the competition at the assembly on Thursday Remember to wear pink this Thursday!!

This week we will:
-learn more about multiplication and its relationship to fractions -work on including specific detail in our writing - see student sample below courtesy of Destin S. -continuing with our novel studies -research the positive benefits of exercise in anticipation of a special visitor next week -participate in an escape room set up by volunteers from the university -started learning about air pressure This week will be a short week. There is no school on Thursday or Friday for students.

You are most welcome to send treats for your child to share with the class. Today Renée was away and students were very excited to welcome back Ms. Ty as their substitute! Tomorrow is junior achievement. We have a presentation by Heather Black on business development. Today we had 14 students brave the cold weather to come to school! It was a great day to be here. There was: -leadership pizza lunch -a presentation about DNA from Professor Zenobia from the University of Calgary. See below for some photos of students with their DNA helix We learned: -about atoms and states of matter. Ask your child about our fun activity to help them remember! -how to write specific descriptive detail -how to find a fraction of a whole number -how to form the letter a in handwriting Make sure you all stay warm out there! It has been a couple of cold days! We have kept busy making welcome cards for our visitor, Anthony the therapy dog! We are very excited. We also spent some time working on our imaginative narratives. We had math groups as well. Overall, it has been pretty quiet. Yesterday some students painted canvases to take home. Enjoy the examples below!

-enjoy guest speaker Jason Eaglespeaker. We were spellbound by his presentation and excited to start writing our own stories. -brainstorm and plan our imaginative narratives. -have no school on Friday. -work with compasses learning about sacred geometry. -continue our study of fractions. -learn about our constitutional rights. -begin learning about the properties of air. PARENTS: Please book in for parent teacher interviews. If Thursday evening doesn't work for you I would be happy to accommodate you at another time. You can call or email anytime :) Also, please sign and return any forms you may have found in your child's report card envelope. Greetings!

You can call the school or go to the website to book an appointment. The grade six students had a fabulous time at Police School this past week. We had presentations from the gang unit, K-9, and HAWCS. We also learned about drugs and healthy relationships. On our last day we were instrumental in helping the Police solve a crime. We even got to question the suspect! Grade five students spent the week with Ms. Leanna or Ms. Courtney. We are looking so forward to being back together in our class next week! Hope to see you Thursday for interviews! Today was the grade six's first day at Police School. Ask your child what they learned! Grade five students were distributed between Ms. Courtney's class and Ms. Leanna's class. It will be a busy week at Police School. Be sure to check back for updates! Thank you to all of you who have returned the field trip paperwork for Police School. We are getting very excited!
This week has been busy! We have: - learned about the pillars of democracy - learned about the Charter of Rights and Freedoms - practiced doodle notes so we can use them to help us remember - wrote a biography about Jason Eaglespeaker - used compasses to make circles and hexagons - listened to No Time to Say Goodbye Next week our grade six students will be attending Police School at the Youth Link Interpretive Center. Field trip forms went home today. Please sign and return them as soon as possible. If your child is in grade five they will remain at the school with either Ms. Leanna or Ms. Courtney.
